Joining the two-wheels-with-motors club

Well, I've joined the two-wheels-with-motors club. Also the club of tons of accessories, like helmets and leather jackets, and the club of low annual insurance premiums.

I picked up a 1978 Yamaha XS 400 for a steal on CL. Only thing I've done to it is dump a bunch of oil in and put a fresh battery. It runs great, not bad for a 31 year old bike!

*highfive*

Welcome to the world of cold, wet, and cheap :)

Dead simple parallel twins, maybe a bit down on power but I bet you'll get 60 mpg. Parts availability *may* be an issue, but ebay and m/c junkyards are your friends.

5p of unasked advice:

www.newenough.com is a great source for m/c gear. Overstocks, etc.

A half or 3/4 helmet is nice for daily practicality & ease of storage. From experience, a full face shield is a must for riding in rain. Leather is overrated: good waterproof textiles are the way to go. Opinions are divided on cheap vs. expensive gear, but I've had great success with my cheap gear. Good brands are TourMaster, Cortech, Scorpion, Fulmer. Good luck!

Congrats! I see quite a few of these Heritage Specials still buzzing around. They seem to be very reliable bikes. Once I worked through the carb sync issues, my '83 took me everywhere I wanted to go. True, you won't win any races, but the last thing a rider needs in a rainy climate is more power. Cheers!
